Va Va Voom – Nicki Minaj
Released: 2012
Album: Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up
Hey, what better song to kick off this list of songs that start with V than a song by a strong female artist.
This V song is an upbeat, pop-infused track that flows about her attraction and desire to nail a particular type of man. In the song, Nicki expresses her fascination with having a fling with a married man and also a model from Dublin. Dublin is a city in Ireland where the good-looking man has charming blue or green eyes with a friendly, charismatic demeanor.
The musical video is exactly what you would expect from Nicki, sex appeal great outfits, and her signature pink lips. It has a catchy chorus and lively production which creates a sense of excitement and allure, making it a fun and flirtatious anthem for young women.
Vacancy – Neil Young
Album: Homegrown
Released: 1975
At the first listen to this song that starts with V, one would be forgiven to assume this is about us two people where one party feels disconnected. However, after listening to this song over the years, I got a sense of entanglement (this word was made popular by Jada Pinkett).
It would seem a guy was in a relationship with a female who had a female friend who was also close or in love with her. So every time all three of them were together, the friend of his lover gave him an attitude. This song has an interesting instrumental bridge that needs no words.
Valentine – 5 Seconds of Summer
Album: Youngblood
Released: 2018
"Valentine" by 5 Seconds of Summer is like a burst of sunshine on a happy day! It's a lively and playful love song that just radiates good vibes. This group of guys rocked the airwaves when they first played it live at the iHeartRadio Music Awards Fan Army Celebration in March 2018.
The use of metaphors is eminently vivid on this track with references to being combative or a sweet cherry pie. These lyrics and the tone of the song make it a great V song from the pop-rock group from Australia. The music video is simple yet beautiful as it is shot on a black backdrop.
Valentine’s Day – David Bowie
Album: The Next Day
Released: 2013
This is a sad song with a haunting story that probably ended in tragedy. It is narrated by an individual who was told of an evil act someone wanted to carry out. With his lyrics, he emphasized the disturbed mental state of an unidentified individual in the song, depicting his capacity to commit such heinous acts against others.
David Bowie left a lot of room for interpretation with his cryptic storytelling and by saying “It's happening today”, we are not sure how the event unfolded. This song is produced by Tony Visconti & David Bowie and it is featured on his 2013 album The Next Day.
Valerie – Mark Ronson Featuring Amy Winehouse
Released: 2007
Album: Version
Next up is on our list of songs beginning with V is Valerie. This is one of our favorite songs from Mark Ronson’s awesome 2007 album. Valerie is an upbeat and soulful song about a troubled relationship and it features the late Amy Winehouse. The video shows Mark Ronson picking a random woman from the crowd (who happened to be Amy Winehouse) and handing her his lyrics sheet to sing the song he had written.
In the lyrics, there is an expression to be with this wild and captivating woman despite the challenges that come with her. There is a conveyance of fondness and love. Valerie peaked at #2 on the UK charts and was successful in many other European countries too.
Valley Girl – Frank Zappa and Moon Zappa
Released: 2022
Album: Valley Girl (Flux Pavilion Remix)
This song that starts with V is a comedic commentary on the cultural phenomenon of Valley Girls in the 1980s. The song playfully teases the Valley Girl talk, which was a trendy way of talking in the early 80s that started with cool teenage girls in sunny California. It also humorously poked fun at what Frank thought were the pampered, well-off teen girls from the beautiful San Fernando Valley in California with his daughter being one of them.
Good enough Frank got his daughter Moon Zappa to feature on the song by providing lyrics in the distinct Valley Girl accent. Moon used known “Valley girl” slang while poking fun at their materialistic and shallow attitudes. The song broke into the top 40 of the Billboard chart and remains his only top 40 hit.
Valleys of Neptune – Jimi Hendrix
Released: 2010
Album: Valleys of Neptune
You may wonder why this Jimi Hendrix song was released in 2010 when we lost this great guitarist 40 years before that. Well, the custodians of his catalog released this amazing posthumous album that contained previously unreleased material.
This song had been kept under wraps for 40 years even though it was originally meant for his final 1970 album Electric Ladyland. However, it didn’t make the cut as the artist didn't quite feel like he nailed the sound, so it had stayed hidden since then. Thankfully his team deemed it fit to release it because let me tell you, it's a fantastic track that really showcases why he is considered a great.
Vanilla – Burna Boy
Album: Love, Damini
Released: 2022
Vanilla is a song by the African giant of Afrobeat Burna Boy. This song is from his 2022 album Love Damini which is his follow-up album to "Twice as Tall" which bagged him a Grammy for Best Global Music Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.
Burna describes how he feels when he sets his eyes on a particular girl called Vanilla. He emphasizes the physical attributes of the girl and how he can’t keep his hands off her. At the time of writing this Burna has just released a new song called “City Boy” and it is off the hook.
Vasoline – Stone Temple Pilots
Album: Purple
Released: 1994
Did you know that the song 'Vasoline' by Stone Temple Pilots was written by the lead singer, Scott Weiland? Interestingly, this track played a significant role in shedding light on his personal struggles with addiction.
He also talked about the song in his book where he admitted to lying to his wife about his situation. By the way, the guitar solo on this track is one of the best I have heard.
Vato – Snoop Dogg featuring B-Real
Released: 2006
Album: Tha Blue Carpet Treatment
This is another Pharrell produced song for Snoop Dogg and they have had a few collaborations over the decades. Vato is a gangsta rap song that starts with the letter V and it narrative a scene witnessed by a Latino that gained his loyalty within a gang context. He saw how a member of a rival gang stood up for himself in the midst of adversity.
Snoop Dogg reflects on the harsh realities of street life and the importance of loyalty and respect within that environment, emphasizing the consequences of disloyalty. The music video has an amazing total of 121 million views on YouTube and it portrays the unity between blacks and Latinos
Velvet Rope – Janet Jackson featuring Venessa-Mae
Released: 1997
Album: Velvet Rope
The first time I heard this song I was like OMG who produced this? Then I checked the credit and saw it was produced by the super-producing duo of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.
They produced songs like Can You Stand the Rain for New Edition and Scream for Janet and Michael Jackson. However, this was something different which made me dig deeper for the sampled song.
Then I discovered it was a song by Malcolm McLaren and World's Famous Supreme Team titled Hobo Scratch with the addition of Tubular Bells from Mike Oldfield. The song made the list for its great production and Janet’s storyline.
Janet shared that the title of the song is all about the barriers we tend to create in our lives, like our very own velvet ropes. These barriers can sometimes prevent others from truly getting to know us and even hinder our self-discovery journey.
Venom – Eminem
Released: 2008
Album: Kamikaze
The song "Venom" serves as the key theme in the soundtrack for the 2018 Columbia Pictures movie, Venom. This film is inspired by the Symbiote Marvel Comics character with the same name.
In this song, Em adopted the persona of the Marvel character Venom which is a liquid-like shape that needs a body to stay alive. Using an aggressive tone, Em creates an intense and adrenaline-pumping track that mirrors the energy of the film.
The music video is popular on YouTube and shows how “Venom jumps from one host body to the next from a student to a bus driver and entire family and it even entered a dog!
Venus Vs. Mars – Jay–Z
Album: The Blueprint 3
Released: 2009
In this awesome song that starts with V produced by Timbaland on The Blueprint 3, Jay-Z takes us on a journey through the complexities of a romantic relationship. Although they liked different things, they were still heavily connected to one another.
It begins all sweet and lovely that they were inseparable, but then things get heated up and it begins to hit a rocky path, and, well, let's just say it didn’t end on a high note. Jay-Z went all in on this one by being super clever and a bit goofy on the wordplay. Beyonce is on the chorus on this one and every time I play this at the clubs it gets a great reaction from the ladies.
Versace – Migos Featuring Drake
Album: Young Rich Niggas
Released: 2013
This song was already big and then Drake jumped on it and the rest is history as they say. Quick question, Can you count the number of times Versace was dropped on this song? I have tried but I always get lost in dancing to this track.
Ok back to our review of this song starting with V, if you want a song that brags about what you have in terms of material things then this is the song for you. The lyrics are filled with references to designer clothing, accessories, and wealth, highlighting the desire for a good life. When Drake jumped on the remix, his verse touched on themes of his success and fame from Toronto to worldwide.
Vibin (Remix) – Boyz II Men Featuring Treach, Craig Mack, Busta Rhymes & Method Man
Album: The Remix Collection
Released: 1995
Next up on this playlist of songs that start with V is a remix that features 4 heavyweight rap artists all from New York and each of them delivered a punch of a verse about partying and just having a good time.
Vibin’ is a single from the from the RnB group’s 1994 album II. However, a remix was done in a remix collection album. The group used this song to describe how fun their studio sessions are. This lively and energetic track combines R&B and hip-hop elements to create a dynamic and engaging musical collaboration.
Vibrate – Petey Pablo featuring Rasheeda
Released: 2004
Album: Still Writing in My Diary: 2nd Entry
This is the last track of the album “Still Writing in My Diary: 2nd Entry.” The music video features Pablo visiting a “pimp my ride” shop to upgrade the sound system on his Bentley. Doesn’t the Bentley already have great speakers?
Anyway back to this rap song that starts with V, the lyrics are tailored towards the body of beautiful women and all the things he wants to do to them. The second verse was delivered by Rasheeda who is now a big fashion designer, and television personality. This hip-hop track has a great vibe to it with the chunk style making it a hit for the dance floor.
Victory – Puff Daddy Featuring The Notorious B.I.G. & Busta Rhymes
Album: No Way Out
Released: 1997
A good part of Puff Daddy’s early career was spent producing and providing one-liners on his artist songs but that changed on the “No Way Out” album. Puffy, with a little help from The Notorious B.I.G. and Busta Rhymes, delivered this track.
The lyrics are all about celebrating when life throws challenges your way, and you still manage to rise above them and achieve some sweet victory. By the way, the album features many great songs including Been Around The World, Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down and I’ll Be Missing You.
Video Phone – Beyoncé featuring Lady Gaga
Released: 2008
Album: I Am... Sasha Fierce
Okay next up let’s talk about a crunked-up song by Queen Bee and hope it is approved by her Beehives. Video Phone remix is all about a playful flirtation and, well, the idea of making a steamy video on your mobile phone – pretty daring, right?
Well, that is who both artists are, they are comfortable pushing boundaries. This was not a song that did extremely well on the Billboard chart however it has clocked over 135 million views on YouTube.
Vienna – Billy Joel
Album: The Stranger
Released: 1977
"Vienna" by Billy Joel is a song that offers words of wisdom and encouragement to young people, advising them to take life at a slower pace and not rush through it. The lyrics emphasize the importance of patience and reflection, suggesting that there's no need to achieve everything too quickly. It's a heartfelt and timeless message about the value of taking time to enjoy life's journey.
Billy Joel dropped the gem 'Vienna' on his 1977 fifth studio album called 'The Stranger.' Believe it or not, that album was a chart-topping sensation, holding the number two spot for a whopping six weeks! However here is a fun twist – 'Vienna' was originally released as a B-side but still managed to shine bright to become a Platinum hit track.
Billy Joel has his own take, saying it's all about aging gracefully and the value of taking time to enjoy life's journey. But rumor had it that the song's inspiration came from his estranged dad. No matter the truth behind the backstory, it's no surprise that 'Vienna' is still rockin' today and loved by many.
Violet Hill – Coldplay
Album: Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends
Released: 2008
Coldplay has two great songs that start with V, Viva La Vida, and Violet Hill. But due to our rule of only featuring one song by a particular artist, we had a tough choice to make. Although the former charted at number one, we have gone for the latter and you will see why.
Violet Hill is a politically charged song that expresses frustration and disillusionment with war and global conflict. So, the music video for "Violet Hill" started off with the band hanging out in Sicily, Italy which was pretty cool. But then, a few days later, they dropped another video subtitled "Dancing Politicians," where they had some fun poking fun at political figures which included leaders of some very powerful countries.
Visions Of Love – Mariah Carey
Album: Mariah Carey
Released: 1990
This is a song about someone who visualizes the type of man she wants in her life and prays that one day he finds her. She promised that when he did find her all he had to do was love her and she would dedicate her life and entire body to him.
Mariah's powerful vocals showed the emotional intensity of this love, making it a soulful and passionate declaration of affection and devotion. The feeling you have when you are with someone who you have a genuine connection with is great.
This first song on her debut album spent four weeks at number one. You can expect her to have more number one hits and yes she does, infact she has 19 of them.
Viva Las Vegas – Elvis Presley
Album: Elvis' Gold Records Volume 4
Released: 1968
This toe-tapping hit made its debut in the movie of the same name, where Elvis shared the screen with the fabulous Ann-Margret. The lyrics describe the draw of Las Vegas nightlife, entertainment, and gambling, presenting it as a place of adventure and fun.
You know what's really interesting? People couldn't help but talk about the incredible chemistry between Elvis and Ann-Margret, both on and off-screen. There were even rumors that their connection went beyond just the movie set! Priscilla Presley, Elvis's wife, had her concerns, but in the end, the friendship between them endured and stayed strong until Elvis's untimely passing. Every time I had to play this song, I couldn’t believe how old is as it is an evergreen song.
Vivrant Thang – Q-Tip
Album: Amplified
Released: 1999
When you think of A Tribe Called Quest you immediately have to mention Q-Tip or the other name he is known, Abstract. But some folks would not agree with me as they would mention Phife Dawg. Hey, that is fine by me because this is a pioneer group of Hip-Hop.
Vivrant Thang is the first single from Q-Tip’s first solo album Amplified. They actually sampled the beat from the groovy 1975 tune 'I Wanna Stay' by Love Unlimited Orchestra by slowing it down a little and adding other elements to it. Vivrant Thang gave Q-Tip a top ten hit song on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart.
Vogue – Madonna
Released: 1990
Album: I'm Breathless
What is a playlist with various genres that doesn’t feature a Madonna song. I think she has a song for every playlist and this "songs that start with V" playlist is not an exception.
"Vogue" by Madonna is a dance-pop anthem that pays tribute to the art of voguing, a dance style popularized in the LGBTQ+ ballroom culture in New York. The song's lyrics describe the glamorous world of fashion, dance, and self-expression, encouraging listeners to strike a pose and let their individuality shine. It was all about embracing that fabulous, confident spirit!"
This track played a big part in making Madonna the Queen of Pop and an icon in the LGBTQ+ community. Her confident delivery and catchy melody made "Vogue" an iconic anthem of self-empowerment and artistic freedom.
Voices – Disturbed
Album: The Sickness
Released: 2000
The penultimate song on our playlist of songs that start with V is a heavy metal track that explores themes of inner turmoil and psychosis. That is a big word there (psychosis), learned this just a few weeks ago and thought I would use it when the time is right.
Starting off the album, this song really made its mark, on the rock scene and there are other tracks to look out for on the album e.g. Conflict and Numb.
The lyrics of this heavy metal song that starts with V depict a struggle with disturbing and violent thoughts that seem to be taking control of his head. The singer battles with these inner demons, seeking to maintain a grip on reality and sanity.
Vossi Bop – Stormzy
Released: 2019
Album: Heavy Is the Head
Just a heads-up! "Vossi" or "vossy" is like a cool slang word for Courvoisier cognac, kind of like how folks use "Henny" for Hennessy. It's just a fun way to talk about a favorite drink! It is also related to a viral dance move that was created by a Twitter user and became popular in the UK. Ok now that we got that out of the way, let’s dive in as this song is not about the viral dance move.
So, when it comes to the lyrics, as mentioned earlier Stormzy isn't exactly trying to make you hit bust the Vossi Bop, no no no no. Instead, he's all about showing off his lifestyle, especially when it comes to impressing the ladies. His confidence got him to diss a man who was married to a girl he had on a daily. He also took a dig at the then leader of a great country, such audacity. A fantastic song to end this playlist of songs that start with V.
