Series of Songs That Start With E and our take on them
This playlist is sourced from what a group of DJs friends and I have played at events we have hosted over the last 20 years. While some of them are also based on radio airplay by our in-house DJ friends. We are excited to bring to you this series of songs that start with a specific letter. Begins our series of songs that start with a specific letter is, Songs That Start With The Letter E. We had fun making this first episode of songs starting with E and we hope you would enjoy it too.
E.I. – Nelly
Our first featured song starting with E is "E.I." This hip-hop song by Nelly, was released as the second single from his debut Album called Country Grammar. Nelly came onto the hip-hop scene with a fresh southern sound that took the hip-hop scene by storm.
The track is characterized by its southern beats produced by Jason Epperson who also produced several big hits for Nelly. The music video introduced Nelly’s group called St. Lunatics at a house party full of pretty women. This song peaked at 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and 11 on the Official Chart UK.
E.T – Katy Perry Featuring Kanye West
Another popular song that starts with E is "E.T." This is a pop song by Katy Perry featuring Kanye West and, released in 2011. The track explores themes of extraterrestrial love and is known for its futuristic and space-themed production. Earned it – The Weeknd
By far the sexiest and most sensual of songs that start with E. "Earned It" appears on the soundtrack of the film "Fifty Shades of Grey". If you haven’t seen the movie, you need to watch it (The movie is Rated R by MPAA).
This 2015 track produced by Stephan Moccio and DaHeala explores themes of desire, temptation, and the complex dynamics of a romantic relationship earning it a spot on our songs starting with E playlist.
The Weeknd's soulful vocals and the song's sultry lyrics create an intimate and seductive atmosphere. “Earned It” earned The Weeknd a number 3 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and a number 4 spot on the UK Charts.
Earth – Lil Dicky
If you are looking for a song that touches on climate change, then you have found the right song in "Earth." Lil Dicky used a form of comedy to create environmental awareness while addressing the issues.
Earth was released in 2019 and it featured the voices of numerous artists all in their bid to raise awareness. Protecting the planet requires collective action.

Earth Song – Michael Jackson
This song spreads the message of environmental awareness and for humans to have compassion for the world. "Earth Song" became a socially conscious song that addresses environmental issues, human suffering, and the need for the whole to be unity.
Released in 1995, this song is Michael Jackson’s impassioned concern for the state of the planet and his plea for change. This is vivid in the music video which depicts the destruction of nature and the consequences of the human race’s actions. "Earth Song" was an impactful song and did very well in the charts worldwide spending 6 weeks at the top of the UK charts,
Earthquake – Labrinth Featuring Tinie Tempah
This song literally shook the UK music scene like an earthquake. Labrinth produced this highly energetic and bass-heavy track so he definitely knew what he wanted. He collaborated with fellow UK superstar Tinie Tempah on this one to make it a hit banger. The track features a combination of electro-funk and hip-hop to produce this up-tempo tune.
The lyrics convey a sense of power and excitement, it compared their musical impact to an earthquake. Earthquake became very popular with DJs making this banger a popular club anthem. For these reasons, Labrinth and Tinie Tempah received accolades and it propelled them to further success in the music industry.
Easily – Red Hot Chili Pepper
This track showcases the band's signature blend of alternative rock and funk. The lyrics seem to be telling a story about war. The artist can’t comprehend why we fight each other and call for bombs to be dropped on lands. Are we literally tired of everything we own and want to destroy it?
Although this song was not chosen as a single from their 1999 album, it still gained significant airplay, especially in the clubs. Do you know what Anthony Kiedis's vocals bring to the table? If you don’t, just listen to this song and hear his tenor on it.
The outro instrumental on this song is Fire, you can easily listen to this song on repeat. We love Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Californication album cover with the red pool and blue ocean.
Eastside – Benny Blanco, Halsey and Khalid
"Eastside" is a top 10 hit song by Benny Blanco however, the vocals are that of Halsey and Khalid. The track revolves around the theme of falling in love. It reminisces about the good times a young couple had in the past, their current emotional complexities, and the yearning to be taken back to those good times. How beautiful would it be if we can all forget about the worries of bills, win the lottery and live the good life with someone we are in love with.
Easy – Commodores
At the first listen of the chorus one would be forgiven to think that this ballad is a love song. Well, it is. However, not in the sense you might have thought it is. This is a song about a man who is clearly in a much happier space after a breakup and enjoying a peaceful life.
While he was in the relationship, he felt pressure to keep up and sometimes fake it but now, he is living his best life. “Easy” is one of the Commodores' most-loved hit songs and they had many however this was one of their songs that start with E.
Eenie Meenie – Sean Kingston and Justin Bieber
This is a pop song from a young JB and Sean that captures the essence of a youthful romance. It is about a girl who clearly has many suitors and can’t seem to choose between all of them. The artist is trying his hardest to nudge the girl to choose him among all her options.
This song was a top 20 Billboard Hot 100 hit song and became a popular radio hit song. As with most of Sean and JB’s songs, this is a playful and catchy pop banger.
Egyptian Reggae – Jonathan Richman Featuring The Modern Lovers
Although this track was released in 1977, it seems like it had been arranged 100s of years before that and somebody just pulled it out from where it’s been hiding. "Egyptian Reggae" is quirky and eclectic at the same time. So, you would be forgiven whatever dance moves you make to it.
Jonathan and the band show their ability to fuse different musical elements into a delightful track. The track is offbeat but I wouldn’t change a thing about it because it is so much enjoyable.
El Cerrito Place – Kenny Chesney
The American Country singer Kenny Chesney tells a story that describes a man’s search for the love of his life. Someone he had lost touch with and had not seen in years. It talks about his search for the girl in all the places they use to go when they were together. He had checked all these places and yet he still can’t find her. Produced by Kenny and Buddy Cannon this country ballad makes our list of songs that start with E.
El Kilo – Orisha
Our broad search of songs that starts with E took us to Havana, Cuba and this group called Orisha. Orisha is a Yoruba word from Nigeria, West Africa used to signify the various deity gods they worship. Without diving too deep, you can see the connection between Cuba and its African roots in Nigeria. But we would leave that to the historians.
The Dictionary meaning of Orisha is “…minor gods or spirits of traditional Yoruba religion and its South American and Caribbean offshoots such as Santeria and Candomblé.” Anyways, back to the track, El Kilo is a rhythmic song by the Cuban hip-hop group released in 2005. The track combines elements of hip-hop and Afro-Cuban influence. Their lyrics touched on poverty and the struggles of the people.
El Lute – Boney M
While we searched our vast database for songs that start with E, we came across this captivating disco-pop song by the group Boney M. “El Lute” tells the story of Eleuterio Sánchez a person who became a symbol of the resistance group against oppression. Think of Robin Hood and you would have an idea of who the man called El Lute is.
Boney M narrates El Lute’s struggle for the freedom of the people of Spain and the authorizes attempt to capture him. The people of the town shield and cover for him whenever the government of the day is closing in. We love Boney M songs especially those that tell stories of real-life people. “El Lute” is a song from the group’s 1979 album titled Oceans of Fantasy
Eleanor Rigby – The Beatles
The haunting lyrics of “Eleanor Rigby” enlighten us about the stories of two people, a church priest, and a lonely woman called Eleanor Rigby. Eleanor lived a life of loneliness and isolation that at her death, nobody came to her graveside except the priest.
The lyrics mentioned a priest who was writing a sermon that no one would listen to. We certainly hope we are not writing a blog post no one would read. This song produced by George Martin has been sampled multiple times. One of the most famous samples is that produced by Kayne West and performed by the talented Talib Kweli called “Lonely People.”
Electric Avenue – Eddy Grant
The track addresses social and economic issues that lead to the 1981 Brixton riot in London, United Kingdom. Under the government of the late Baroness Margaret Thatcher, the Afro-Carribean community was highly unemployed. This led to protests from leaders of the communities which in turn led to police brutality and eventually full-blown civil unrest.
"Electric Avenue" has a catchy chorus born out of the protest theme and it became a chart-topping hit by reaching number 2 on the UK Top 40 chart. It was kept off the top spot by “Down Under” a song by the group Men At Work.
Electric Relaxation – A Tribe Called Quest
You cannot help but love this smooth and laid-back style of raping. The verses were taken by Q-Tip and Phife Dawg from the group A Tribe Called Quest. The song features samples from Ronnie Foster’s “Mystic Brew” and combined it with hip-hop elements which make this a club banger. Q-Tip and Phife are basically using these lyrics to woe a girl that they fancy and want to have that intimate connection with. A Tribe Called Quest have a reputation as hip-hop pioneers in their own rights.
Elevator – Flo Rida Featuring Timbaland
People go crazy when this song is spun on the decks at a party or club scene. Timbaland produced and contribute to the chorus of this song. The song’s lyrics delve into the various characteristics of women Flo met on an elevator going up. Flo Rida has several club hits and commercially successful songs in his discography and "Elevator" is the one that song starts with E. DJ Khalid and Rick Ross are seen making cameo appearances in the music video. This song is a top 20 hit song in both the UK and the US charts.
Elon Musk – Demarco
This is our dancehall entry of songs that start with E. This song is by Demarco and was released in 2022. Demarco likened himself to the billionaire Elon Musk. In the context of having so much money he can do whatever he wants, however he wants, and with whomever he wants.
The music video is full of beautiful Afro-Caribbean women, a white Mustang, and a replica of the iron throne from the series Game of Thrones. You are bound to hear this at those. It is one of the most requested songs by partygoers at the parties we have played recently.
Emotions – Mariah Carey
"Emotions" is a powerful and uplifting R&B ballad by Mariah Carey, released in 1991 as a single from the album Emotions. You know Mariah Carey would always show off her impressive vocal range and emotive delivery, this song is no exception to that. As a matter of fact, it is the first song by MC that made me jump off my chair when she hit that high note.
Mariah has a total of 19 number-one songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This is one of them and it was number one for 3 weeks straight in October 1991. The lyrics express the overwhelming feelings of love and joy experienced in a new relationship.
Empire State of Mind – Jay-Z Featuring Alicia Keys
The iconic Empire State Building in New York which was completed in the 1930s would inspire anyone to want to make it in life. “Empire State of Mind” is a track that celebrates the liveliness of the city and how it would inspire you to achieve your dreams and goals in life. There is a saying that New York is a city that never sleeps. You could get whatever you desire or want at any time of the day in NY City.
Jay-Z is obviously a proud New Yorker as he used this track to rap about all the good stuff about NY. Alicia Keys a fellow New Yorker provided her own take on it too. This track spent 5 weeks at the peak of the Hot 100 charts resonating with both New Yorkers and fans worldwide, solidifying its status as a hip-hop anthem.
Encore – Jay-Z
Jay-Z is one of the greatest and longest-serving MCs in the Hip-Hop industry. So it is no surprise that Jay was bigging up himself as the best rapper out there and he can’t be compared to any other MC. He also mentioned record labels didn’t believe in his dreams but now you are envying his success.
Encore is a song from The Black Album which Jay-Z initially said was going to be his last solo album. However, since then, he had released several solo albums. Kanye West produced Encore and it samples “I Will” by John Holt. This is surely one of the songs that start with E which is a fan-favorite when performed live on stage by Jay-Z.
End Game – Taylor Swift Featuring Ed Sheeran & Future
In this song, you have three artists with big reputations from their various genres. They all came to the table on this track with their various elements to produce a club and radio hit song. This tune explores themes of love, loyalty, and the desire for a lasting relationship with no intent of breaking up. “End Game” was a top 20 Billboard Hot 100 song and also had success across Europe.
End of the Road – Boyz II Men
"End of the Road" is a big hit song in the group’s discography and it shows in the number of weeks it spent on the charts. It spent 13 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart and at the time, this was record-breaking. Two years later they broke their own record with another hit song “I'll Make Love To You.”
The boys sang about a failing relationship where one party finds it difficult to let go. With the boy’s smooth harmonies and emotional way of vocal delivery, the song resonates with people who have experienced the end of their love story. Boyz II Men is one of the most successful R&B groups of all time producing many songs that can be categorized as baby-making music.
Endless Love – Diana Ross and Lionel Richie
Two of the greatest voices in music came together to create this iconic love song. Throughout this classic ballad, Diana Ross and Lionel Richie's vocals blend harmoniously. The song is about two individuals coming together as one to profess their love and commitment to one another for eternity.
This song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 9 weeks and it was also Lionel’s first chart-topper as a solo artist after breaking away from the Commodores. It is one of a number of love songs on our list of songs that start with E.
Ends – Everlast
This song is from Everlast’s solo album titled “Whitey Ford Sings the Blues.” "Ends" blends Everlast’s distinctive rap with acoustic and electric guitar. In this song, “Ends” means money so Everlast was singing about how people would do anything to lay their hands on money.
Everlast made refer to poverty, and people’s pursuit of financial stability that cause other people to pay the ultimate price. Everlast is a member of the hip-hop group House of Pain.
Envy – So Solid Crew
So Solid Crew was a large talented group of British artists in the garage and grime genre. They played a significant role in the UK urban music scene during the late 1990s and early 2000s. “Envy was released in 2001 with verses from Megaman, Asher D, and Ms Dynamite. It is a Grime song about how great a crew So Solid Crew is and how others envy their success now that they are made.
Grime is a genre of music that originated in the UK in the early 2000s, It is a unique blend of various influences, including UK garage, hip-hop, dancehall, and electronic music. It is fast-paced and belongs to the electronic dance music (EDM) family.
Erase & Rewind – The Cardigans
"Erase & Rewind" is a melodic pop-rock song from the group’s fourth studio album “Gran Turismo.” In this tune, the group reflects on the desire to go back in time to change events they saw as mistakes. This is a desire that most of us have. If only we can go and change some certain decisions we took in the past, I think we just might be the better for it.
The Cardigans is a Swedish pop-rock group and the lead vocalist is Nina Persson. Her soothing vocals and the band’s instrumentals capture a wistful mood. This song was a hit around Europe and is our pop-rock entry for songs that start with E.
Escape (The Pina Colada Song) – Rupert Holmes
This is another soft rock entry for songs that start with E. “Escape” is an interesting soft rock song about a married man who was tired of his marriage and was looking for something exciting and adventurous. Only to find out that his Mrs was in the same situation and was also seeking the same thing. The irony is that their search leads them back to each other. It created an unexpected romantic twist, it seems the couple just didn’t talk to one another to express their hidden desires.
Newspapers used to reserve a portion of their pages for personal ads in the 70s. You can liken these columns to the social media platforms of today. People showcase themselves to the readers and you can send a letter to the person you desire or want to be friends with.
Essence – Wizkid Featuring Tems
This is our modern-day Afrobeats entry for songs that start with E. On this track, Tems expresses her desire to be with this man as she openly declared her love for him. The man unknowingly seems to have swept her off her feet so to say. Wizkid response was cocky. He implied that he was the man, and if he left her for another woman, she would just kill herself.
Wizkid grew up in the poverty-ravished neighborhood called Ojuelegba in Lagos, Nigeria. He became a successful artist when the more famous Banky W took him under his wing and signed him to EME Records.
“Essence” gained Wizkid his second Top 10 hit song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His first was a feature on “One Dance” by Drake which introduced him to a wide audience.
Everlong – Foo Fighters
"Everlong" is a heartfelt alternative rock entry for our list of songs that start with E. This is the second single from their studio album The Colour and the Shape. Dave Grohl’s lyrics on this track express his desire for real love. He asked the lady to promise him that she would not fall out of love with him.
The band showcased a dynamic sound combined with energetic guitar riffs. “Everlong” literally saved the band from breaking up according to the lead singer. This song earned Foo Fighters a top 20 hit in the UK chart.
Every Breath You Take – The Police
This is a song about someone who is truly madly deeply in love. However, the other person seems to be a heartbreaker who pretends to be in love but is clearly not. People often mistake this track for a love song, but its theme is that of obsession and possessiveness in a relationship.
The Police are one of the most influential bands of their era and have certainly left a lasting impact on music. “Every Breath You Take” spent 8 weeks at number one in the US charts.
Every Day of the Week – Jade
Jade expresses their love, desire, and commitment in the relationship they are in. The group professes their passion and dedication to their partner by saying they would love them every single day. Produced by Robert Jerald and Cassandra Mills, this song gave the three-girl R&B group a top 20 Billboard hit track. This is a great 90s R&B song that features at those 90s-themed parties.
Every little step – Bobby Brown
Bobby Brown was the darling of R&B in the late 80s and early 90s. He is a member of the group New Edition which comprises of Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, and Ralph Tresvant. Produced by two legends L.A. Reid & Babyface, "Every Little Step" gave Bobby Brown another top 3 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Till today, I am still trying to learn some of Bobby Brown’s dance moves from the music video. The song is about a man’s desire to be with a girl and when the girl finally calls him, he froze. He later gained the composure to take his rightful place in the girl’s life. Songs like this are what solidified his status as a prominent figure in the R&B and pop music scene.
Every Morning – Sugar Ray
A song about a boyfriend having trust issues in his relationship with his girlfriend. He believes she is cheating on him with another guy. However he has reached the point where he couldn’t care what she does. The musical video is shot with an 80s-themed party in mind.
It shows scenes of people dressed in that 80s style and dancing on roller skates in a club. This is another pop-rock song that gets a feature on our list of songs that start with E. It gave the group their first and only top 3 Billboard Hot 100 song.
Every Time I Close My Eyes – Babyface featuring Kenny G
This Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 track is a passionate R&B ballad by Babyface featuring Kenny G, released in 1996. The track explores the desire for deep love and longing to be with the one you love. It seems like Babyface can’t believe his luck in finding a woman that he thoroughly loves and who loves him back too.
With Babyface providing the vocals and Kenny G the soulful saxophone, the chemistry between the two artists is undeniable. You might be wondering who the female voice on the bridge is, that is Mariah Carey. Her less prominent contribution still made an impact on the track.
Everybody (Backstreet's Back) – Backstreet Boys
This song that starts with E is our entry for a successful and much like boy band group. This song screams we are back! Everybody is a song from the boy band’s second album Backstreet’s Back (1997). The music video shows the band’s tour bus breaking down at night in the middle of nowhere.
The tour guide walked them to an abandoned house where they spent the night while he went to get help fixing the bus. If you want to know what happened afterward in this haunted house, please watch the video. “Everybody” produced by Denniz PoP and Max Martingave gave the boy band a top 5 US hit song.
Everybody Hurts – R.E.M.
This song is actually a motivational song to stay strong in spite of the challenges you might be facing. The song's compassionate and uplifting message has made it an enduring anthem of solace and comfort. It offers a reminder that even the rich and famous suffer pain and sorrow sometimes and we are not alone in our struggles.
The music visual shows people stuck in a traffic jam for what seems to be hours. It shows scenes of various people carrying gloomy faces or being involved in an argument with another. The music video is a must-watch.
Everybody Knows – Leonard Cohen
This is our synth-pop entry for songs that start with E. The track delves into themes of disillusionment, cynicism, and the darker aspects of society by touching on some social issues. Cohen's used his deep, gravelly voice alongside poetic lyrics to create this haunting song.
It is like everybody knows what everybody wants but we still don’t give everybody what everybody wants. That is enough “everybody” in this write-up. Everybody was used 44 times in this song called “Everybody.”
Everyday is Like Sunday – Morrissey
Morrissey seems to show their disguise with a seaside town they feel show have been closed down or swept away by the tide. This is a song produced by Stephen Street and was released as a single from the 1988 album Viva Hate. The music visual doesn’t deplete that of loneliness and isolation as there were lots of vibrant people in the town.
Everything Has Changed – Taylor Swift Featuring Ed Sheeran
"Everything Has Changed" is a heartfelt and tender collaboration between Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran, released in 2012. This is the second entry for these two on our songs that start with E playlist.
It is the story of someone who has been captured by the essence of a blossoming romance. It highlights the transformative effect this new love has on the individuals involved. The visuals for the song show two kids playing Ed and Taylor sharing a great experience at their school. “Everything Has Changed is a successful entry in both artists' long catalogs.
Everything I Do I do It for you – Bryan Adams
"Everything I Do I Do It for You" is a song that spent 7 weeks at the peak of the US charts. It is a timeless powerful love ballad by talented Bryan Adams. The track expresses deep devotion and unconditional love. It declared that all actions are driven by the desire to please a significant other. Adams' emotive vocals and guitar solos made this a great song and it solidifies its place as one of the most iconic love songs of all time.
Everything I Wanted – Billie Eilish
Billie sang about not trusting anybody else apart from her brother. She found solace and comfort in the fact that he always had her back. The track delves into the pressures of fame and the complex emotions that come with success.
In the visuals for this song, Billie was driving around in a car with her brother by her side. “Everything I Wanted” became a top ten hit song for Alternative Pop artist in the US. It also peaked at number three on the UK charts making it a commercially successful song for her.
Everything is Everything – Lauryn Hill
Lauryn Hill released this soulful R&B song on her 1998 album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill." The track encapsulates the idea that everything in life is interconnected. We must be aware of that and strive for positivity and growth. Youth communities struggled with injustice and police brutality at the time this song was written and performed.
This song seems to address the fact that those on top do not want others to get there. The music video shows a city revolving around a record player. Lauryn Hill won the Grammy Award for Album Of The Year, becoming the first female rap artist to do that.
Everywhere – Tim McGraw
A country song entry for our playlist of songs that start with E. This is a song about two people who love each other but ended up with different spouses. The reason is that at a young age, they both moved out of the town they grew up in to pursue their dreams. "Everywhere" peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart.
Excuse Me Miss – Jay-Z featuring Pharrell
"Excuse Me Miss" features smooth and seductive lyrics from the iconic rap artist Jay-Z. The song seems to imply the artist is trying his hardest to impress a girl he fancy. Telling her about all the good things he owns and if she was with him, he would give her the best of the world.
The Neptunes produced "Excuse Me Miss," which features Pharrell's soulful voice. The video shows Pharrell in an oversize suede suit but he still looked good in it though. This song gained Jay-Z a top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
Exhale (Shoop Shoop) – Whitney Houston
"Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" is a soulful and empowering R&B song by Whitney Houston, released in 1995. As a writer and performer of many great love songs, Babyface wrote this song for Whitney. The track serves as the theme song for the film "Waiting to Exhale" and reflects on the strength and resilience of women in the face of adversity.
This is one of Whitney’s songs that debuted straight at number one. It pushed Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy” off the top spot. Mariah Carey got her revenge the following week when “One Sweet Day” featuring Boyz II Men toppled Whitney’s song.
Exodus – Bob Marley & The Wailers
"Exodus" is a reggae entry for our playlist of songs that start with E. Released in 1977, this song became an anthem of liberation and unity among the people. The lyrics speak to the desire for social and economic changes for the people.
Many people know that Bob Marley's songs have powerful messages. The message in this song is accompanied by The Wailers' signature sound. No wonder "Exodus" is one of the most iconic and influential songs in reggae history, transcending generations and inspiring various communities to liberate themselves.
Expecting to Fly – Neil Young
The next track on this playlist of songs that start with E is a Psychedelic rock song. The vocals of the song are credited to Buffalo Springfield. This is about a guy who was trying to heal from a broken relationship. A version of "Expecting to Fly" appears in Terry Gilliam's movie "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas".
Expensive Shit – Fela Kuti
"Expensive Shit" is an influential Afrobeat song by the legendary Nigerian artist Fela Kuti, released in 1975. On it, Fela confronts the then-perceived corrupt authorities who tried to frame him. He recounts the actions of the authorities who tried to extort money from him by planting evidence of drug possession in his house.
Fela outwits them by swallowing the evidence planted, leaving them with no evidence. His arrest led to his detention in a prison known as Alagon, which had a very bad reputation at the time.
